How it works

HOW RANSOMWARE WORKS

Ransomware attacks work by gaining access to your computer or device, and then locking and encrypting the data stored on it. It often happens when victims mistakenly download malware through email attachments or links from unknown sources. These links are disguised as legitimate files.

Ransomware prevents you from accessing the files stored on your computer and essentially holds your files / devices hostage, which can wreak extreme havoc for larger organizations.

While a ransom is being demanded, it can range from bitcoins to thousands of dollars and there are some instances where victims have limited time to make payment. Also, there is no guarantee that your data can be retrieved back after making payment since the attackers may never give you the decryption key, which makes ransomware tricky to negotiate.
